Dear Families,
The end of the school year is bittersweet. While we look forward to summer holidays we always pause and think about the wonderful memories of a school year together. We hope you take time to celebrate all the growth in your children and hope you’ve found special moments this year that will be part of the stories your children will share when they talk about Dr. Freda Miller School.
We are so proud of the students at Dr. Freda Miller School and love the way they all engaged in land-based learning, the new curriculum and found new relationships with classmates.
Staff and students worked and played together, embraced OLA(Outdoor Learning and Arts), spent time with their buddy classes and became great advocates for the environment and the natural world! Together we incorporated Indigenous ways of knowing, looked at the effects of invasive species in our natural environment, used Den time to connect and collaborate and brought in many outside speakers to help us on our learning journeys. The Winter Solstice Concert and Art Walk showcased our fine art achievements and brought our school community together. In May and June, we were able to bring a Drumming Residency to students, which was most remarkable!
With the support of our School Enrichment Society, we experienced a fantastic Evergreen Theatre Show and an Inline Skating residency. We learned about falling and getting back up again with every student celebrating growth in themselves.
The good times and tough times this year have helped us to value what is important. We learned that we count on each other in a place we all belong. Thank you to the students and staff for stepping up and always helping each other in amazing ways.
If you are leaving Dr. Freda Miller School, we hope you have found all the things “bear” represents; courage, strength, perseverance, and care for and protection of others. We hope you have learned to take risks, make mistakes, learn new things about yourself and the world, and have grown in a safe space that felt like home.
For our grade 5 students leaving us, thank you for being amazing cubs! Many of you started when the school was first opened! Please come back and visit us when you can or drop us a note to say how you are doing or that you’ve graduated and are ready to take on the world!
When we walk together in a good way, we go to what is meaningful, kind and caring. Thank you, parents, students and staff, for doing just this!
Have a safe and happy summer!
