January 11th, 2026 Update

Dear Dr. Freda Miller Families,

It was wonderful to welcome our community back to school after the winter break. Students were excited to see their friends and teachers, and things are off running already. We continue to welcome new families to our school. There have been many mid-year moves and our current students are so amazing with how they take care of the new students moving into our school.

We have an amazing school community, rich with diversity and filled with amazing humans all working to do their very best. Many classrooms have been working on kindness and creating a culture of care in our building. The words we use, matters, how we respond to each other, matters; and learning to listen respectfully, communicate in a calm manner and support each other is what makes a difference for our school.

This is the same for our parent community. If something arises that is perceived as a problem, please be respectful in how we communicate with one another. We are all doing our very best.

Office Assistants

We have 30 amazing grade 5 students willing to step up to assist in our office over their lunch hour. The students will be working in pairs between 11:30 and 12:15 every day to answer phones, help solve problems with students (band-aids and ice packs) and help sign in students coming back from appointments or leaving for appointments. If you happen to call during those hours or need to stop by for something, please be patient as they are learning and doing their very best. We will have adult support close by when needed.

New EAL Assistant

Please join me in welcoming Renee Xu to our Dr. Freda Miller staff. Renee has been hired as a 15-hour English Additional Language assistant to support some of our English Second Language learners with vocabulary, grammar and reading development. She will predominately be working with students in grades 3, 4 and 5.

Mount Royal Student Teachers

We were thrilled to welcome year four student teachers to our school community. We have a cohort of 8 eager students ready to grow and learn alongside our remarkable teachers. Their practicum runs from January 6 to April 17th.

Kindergarten Registration

Kindergarten registration opens on Monday. If you have a child ready for Kindergarten or know of someone living close by, please encourage them to register.

SoundKreation Dance Residency

With thanks to the Dr. Freda Miller Enrichment society, we have SoundKreation joining our school January 19, 20, 21, 22 and 26, 27, 28 and 29th for a dance residency.

Thank you for welcoming SoundKreations into your school community! We will be your Captains on this journey of moves, grooves and dancing shoes :) Your SoundKreations instructor will be leading the students on an exploratory adventure of Movement, Mindfulness, Physical Literacy and the Creative Process and will be offering students a chance to explore what is possible in a safe environment filled with people who believe in them! This voyage of movement and expression is highly interactive, entirely approachable, and so much FUN!

Our Mandate

  1. Support a Student’s Physical, Mental, and Creative Wellbeing!
  2. Create a context in which courage is celebrated above all else.
  3. Through the consistent celebration of courage, we create environments of brave expression, hyper growth, and the honouring of differences.
  4. Offer a safe environment for students to express themselves as they are.
  5. Offer content that is culturally and socially relevant to the students.
  6. Design our classes to reduce opportunities for anxiety.
  7. Connect, blow minds, and widen eyes. Engagement is our North Star.
  8. Work with the class’ energy, not against it.
  9. Support the momentum of “Social Encouragement” so that students are always left with the self-sustaining interest and tools to continue moving and expanding.
