Professional Learning Day- Friday April 19, 2024
On Friday, staff engaged in Profession Learning to develop practice across many domains. The CBE offered workshops for support staff and teachers at many schools throughout the city and hosted online learning sessions. Here at home at Dr. Freda Miller School, many teachers engaged in looking at literacy and assessment practices and a group of 8 teachers continued their work on their Outdoor Learning Certification Course. This course has been created in collaboration with two non-profit organizations with over 30 years of expertise in Outdoor Learning within formal, informal, recreational and other educational sectors. It uses a growing body of research, pedagogy and practice from researchers and practitioners and features the support and resources of more than 70 outdoor learning organizations across North America. Over the next few months, while we are learning more about outdoor learning, we will share snippets of the course with you. For today, this really resonated with us:
“Research shows when kids explore and ask questions outdoors, they become emotionally invested.”
If you are interested in the course, see the information at https://takemeoutside.ca/certification/
On the homepage of website this week with the Weekly Update, we are featuring poetry and art by a grade 4 student called “Fish Creek”.
Parking and Drop Off- Please move ahead of the Crosswalk
- If you are dropping off your child, please move ahead of the Crosswalk. When you park too close to the crosswalk, it creates a blind spot where we can’t see traffic coming. This creates a very dangerous situation for families crossing and for admin who is helping to control traffic.
- The parking lot remains a drop off for Handicap access only.
- Arriving at SEEDS of S.P.I.C.E after 8:15? Please use street parking.
Sports Day is coming – June 26 - Volunteers needed!
We are excited to be planning our first Sports Day, that will run the second last day of school from 1:30pm- 3:00pm. Last year we had to cancel due to heavy smoke and a poor air quality index, so we are hoping for clear skies that day.
- If you can volunteer to help run a station, please email your child’s teacher!
- The morning kindergarten class will run their own stations, supported by some of our Grade 5 students. The afternoon kindergarten class will participate in the afternoon rotations.
- We are hoping for 20- 30 volunteers. A reminder that you need your volunteer security clearance to help run a station. Security Clearances take 4-6 weeks to process, so please get started by going to your MyCBE account to start the process if you want to volunteer.
