Earth Day was Amazing!

When we asked students to share highlights of Earth Day, here is what they shared.

“We went to Fish Creek Park and did a scavenger hunt which was fun. Some people took a stick and went to an ant hill so I told them that we can’t disturb the ants. We also saw some garbage which wasn’t good, so we picked it up.”

“We went to Fish Creek Park with our field journals and drew the land. I was surprised how much the grass had changed since last time. I learned that things change very quickly in nature.”

“I helped pick up garbage on Earth Day, around the school and near the pond. We got 4 bags of garbage. Mr. Hoover said we collected 6-7 pounds of garbage.  I think people should take care of the earth.”

“We got to go to the pond to see what was happening. There was a lot of mud, underground hoses and things we had never seen before. I hope the pond gets cleaned soon. After they drain the bad stuff, the rain will fill up the pond again.”

Teachers Presenting at an Outdoor Learning Conference

In mid-May, Mr. Demman and Ms. Downing will be presenting at an Outdoor Learning Conference that brings together educators at all levels (preschool to post-secondary) from across Canada and the United States.   Their presentation, selected from over 300 proposals, will highlight the core routines and protocols we use at our school to make outdoor learning effective and meaningful.

For this week, a quote that speaks to the work all teachers are doing to engage students on the land:

“The children and nature movement is fueled by this fundamental idea: the child in nature is an endangered species, and the health of children and the health of the Earth are inseparable.”  ~ Richard Louv

On the website this week with the Weekly Update, we are featuring poetry and art by a grade 2 student called “Prairies”.
