Dear Families,
While we wait for the snow, we are deep in learning at Dr. Freda Miller School. Routines are set, students are now familiar with expectations for learning at their grade, and we continue to use the land as teacher in many ways.
On November 8, 2024, all staff joined together in a day of learning to further develop and apply foundational knowledge of Indigenous Education.
The day was called Maatoomsii'Pookaiks (MAAH-DOOM-SEE-BOO-GAAKS). This name, gifted to the CBE by Piikani Elder Leonard Bastien in 2022 translates to putting children first. This name upholds and sustains the CBE mission: Students come first.
Elder Casey Eagle Speaker shared the meaning of the Blackfoot word Iikakimat, which reflects resilience, perseverance, and the commitment to "try hard." Elder Casey’s teachings inspire us to work together as a collective to support the success and well-being of the Indigenous students we serve.
We were thrilled to see the many examples of student outdoor learning at Dr. Freda Miller School highlighted at the CBE System Learning Day.
Our day at Dr. Freda Miller School, provided time to celebrate achievements, plan together for student learning and work and connect with one another late in the day at Fish Creek Provincial Park to visit and make Bannock.
We are incredibly fortunate to have the natural environment as part of our learning environment. It brings curiosity, wonder, peace and perspective building. Students gain an understanding of good stewardship and relationship building with one another and the land.
We are so grateful for the students we teach and the many ways they learn. We hope you follow our journey on our Instagram @drfredamillerschoolcbe.
